Patrick J. Smith has been a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield since July 2010. He holds a first class degree in Applied Chemistry from Manchester Metropolitan University, which he studied for part-time whilst working for Ilford Ltd. He completed his doctoral studies at Cambridge University and was awarded his PhD in 2002.
Previously to Sheffield, he has worked in the UK (Brian Derby, Manchester, 2002-05), the Netherlands (Ulrich S. Schubert, Eindhoven, 2005-07) and Germany (Jan G. Korvink, Freiburg, 2007-10).

 


 


For the last ten years, his research has been primarily concerned with applied inkjet printing. His group at Sheffield undertakes funded research into reactive inkjet printing, controlled crystallisation and polymer printing. Other research interests are involved with drying behaviour, inkjet used in tissue engineering, printed electronics and additive manufacture.
In August 2012, Patrick was selected as one of the very first positions on  "EPSRC's Early Career Forum for Manufacturing Research." He has edited one book, published two book chapters, two patents and over forty peer-reviewed papers. Currently, his H Index stands at 15, and his i-10 index at 18.

Since joining Sheffield, he has attracted funding in the following areas: "Inkjet printed sensors", (Pennine Water Group, Amount: £6,000), "Security Printing on Copper Cables" (KTA R&D Collaborative Award, Amount: £33,625), "Reactive inkjet printing and controlled crystallisation" (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK, Amount: £121,459)
His group is currently composed of one post-doctoral research associate and five PhD students.
